इन्द्रः

अस्ते॑व॒ सु प्र॑त॒रं लाय॒मस्य॒न्भूष॑न्निव॒ प्र भ॑रा॒ स्तोम॑मस्मै ।वा॒चा वि॑प्रास्तरत॒ वाच॑म॒र्यो नि रा॑मय जरितः॒ सोम॒ इन्द्र॑म्

जैसे धनुर्धर अपना बाण बहुत दूर तक छोड़ता है, वैसे ही सज-सँवारकर इसके लिए स्तुति आगे बढ़ाओ। हे विप्रो, अपनी वाणी से विरोधी की वाणी को पार कर जाओ; हे स्तोता, सोम के द्वारा इन्द्र को यहीं रोक लो।

Like an archer shooting his arrow far, bring forth the praise song for him, as if dressing yourself up for it. Poets, use your speech to overcome the speech of the rival; singer, make Indra settle down here at the soma.

दोहे॑न॒ गामुप॑ शिक्षा॒ सखा॑यं॒ प्र बो॑धय जरितर्जा॒रमिन्द्र॑म् ।कोशं॒ न पू॒र्णं वसु॑ना॒ न्यृ॑ष्ट॒मा च्या॑वय मघ॒देया॑य॒ शूर॑म्

दूध दुहकर (हवि देकर) अपने सखा को अपनी ओर करने का यत्न करो; हे स्तोता, प्रेमी इन्द्र को जगाओ। धन से भरे हुए कोश के समान उस शूर को दान देने के लिए यहाँ ले आओ।

Win over your friend the way you win a cow by milking her; singer, wake Indra, the lover. Like a well-bucket full of goods that has been let down, draw the hero up so he gives bounty.

किम॒ङ्ग त्वा॑ मघवन्भो॒जमा॑हुः शिशी॒हि मा॑ शिश॒यं त्वा॑ शृणोमि ।अप्न॑स्वती॒ मम॒ धीर॑स्तु शक्र वसु॒विदं॒ भग॑मि॒न्द्रा भ॑रा नः

हे मघवन्, लोग तुझे भोजन देने वाला उदार क्यों कहते हैं? मुझे तेज़ कर — मैं सुनता हूँ कि तू तीक्ष्ण करने वाला है। हे शक्र, मेरी बुद्धि फलदायी हो; हे इन्द्र, हमें धन दिलाने वाला सौभाग्य ला दे।

Why, then, generous one, do they call you a giver of good things? Sharpen me: I hear you are one who sharpens. Śakra, let my thought bring results; Indra, bring us good fortune that finds wealth.

त्वां जना॑ ममस॒त्येष्वि॑न्द्र संतस्था॒ना वि ह्व॑यन्ते समी॒के ।अत्रा॒ युजं॑ कृणुते॒ यो ह॒विष्मा॒न्नासु॑न्वता स॒ख्यं व॑ष्टि॒ शूरः॑

हे इन्द्र, संग्राम में आमने-सामने डटे हुए लोग अपने-अपने अधिकार की लड़ाइयों में तुझे ही अलग-अलग पुकारते हैं। वहाँ जो हविवाला है वही तुझे अपना साथी बनाता है; वह शूर सोम न निचोड़ने वाले से मित्रता नहीं चाहता।

Indra, when people stand facing each other in disputes over what is 'mine', they call on you in the clash. There the one who brings the offering makes you his ally; the hero wants no friendship with the one who does not press soma.

धनं॒ न स्य॒न्द्रं ब॑हु॒लं यो अ॑स्मै ती॒व्रान्सोमाँ॑ आसु॒नोति॒ प्रय॑स्वान् ।तस्मै॒ शत्रू॑न्सु॒तुका॑न्प्रा॒तरह्नो॒ नि स्वष्ट्रा॑न्यु॒वति॒ हन्ति॑ वृ॒त्रम्

जो हविवाला यजमान इसके लिए बहते हुए धन जैसा प्रचुर, तीखा सोम निचोड़ता है, उसके वेगवान और नुकीली आर वाले शत्रुओं को इन्द्र दिन के आरम्भ में ही हटा देता है और वृत्र का वध करता है।

Whoever, bringing offerings, presses sharp soma for him like abundant, flowing wealth: for that man, early in the day, he keeps off well-armed, swift enemies and strikes down Vṛtra.

यस्मि॑न्व॒यं द॑धि॒मा शंस॒मिन्द्रे॒ यः शि॒श्राय॑ म॒घवा॒ काम॑म॒स्मे ।आ॒राच्चि॒त्सन्भ॑यतामस्य॒ शत्रु॒र्न्य॑स्मै द्यु॒म्ना जन्या॑ नमन्ताम्

जिस इन्द्र में हमने अपनी स्तुति रखी है, जिस मघवान् ने अपनी इच्छा हमारी ओर लगा दी है — उसका शत्रु दूर रहकर भी भयभीत हो, और लोगों के तेज-ऐश्वर्य उसके आगे झुक जाएँ।

Indra, in whom we have placed our praise, the generous one who has propped up our desire: even while far off, let his enemy fear; let the splendours of the peoples bow down to him.

आ॒राच्छत्रु॒मप॑ बाधस्व दू॒रमु॒ग्रो यः शम्बः॑ पुरुहूत॒ तेन॑ ।अ॒स्मे धे॑हि॒ यव॑म॒द्गोम॑दिन्द्र कृ॒धी धियं॑ जरि॒त्रे वाज॑रत्नाम्

हे बहुपुकारे गए इन्द्र, तेरे पास जो उग्र आयुध (शम्ब) है, उससे शत्रु को दूर खदेड़ दे। हमें जौ और गौओं से भरा धन दे, और स्तोता की प्रार्थना को पुरस्कार-रूपी रत्न देने वाली बना।

Drive the enemy far away from us, much-invoked one, with that mighty club of yours. Indra, give us wealth in barley and cattle; make the singer's poem one that brings prizes as its treasure.

प्र यम॒न्तर्वृ॑षस॒वासो॒ अग्म॑न्ती॒व्राः सोमा॑ बहु॒लान्ता॑स॒ इन्द्र॑म् ।नाह॑ दा॒मानं॑ म॒घवा॒ नि यं॑स॒न्नि सु॑न्व॒ते व॑हति॒ भूरि॑ वा॒मम्

बैल जैसे पत्थरों से निचोड़े गए तीखे और अन्त में प्रचुर हो जाने वाले सोम जिस इन्द्र के भीतर पहुँच गए हैं — वह मघवान् अपना दान कभी नहीं रोकता; सोम निचोड़ने वाले के लिए वह बहुत-सी अच्छी वस्तुएँ लाता है।

Indra, into whom the sharp soma juices have gone, pressed like bulls and abundant: the generous one does not hold back his giving, and brings much good to the man who presses soma.

उ॒त प्र॒हाम॑ति॒दीव्या॑ जयाति कृ॒तं यच्छ्व॒घ्नी वि॑चि॒नोति॑ का॒ले ।यो दे॒वका॑मो॒ न धना॑ रुणद्धि॒ समित्तं रा॒या सृ॑जति स्व॒धावा॑न्

वह बाज़ी में बढ़-चढ़कर खेलते हुए दाँव जीत लेता है, जैसे कुशल जुआरी ठीक समय पर जीतने वाला पासा चुन लेता है। जो देवों का चाहने वाला है और उनसे धन नहीं रोकता, उसे वह स्वाधीन देव धन से भर देता है।

And he wins the stake by outplaying his opponent, as a gambler picks out the winning throw at the right moment. The one who desires the gods and does not hold back his riches, the self-sufficient one joins with wealth.

गोभि॑ष्टरे॒माम॑तिं दु॒रेवां॒ यवे॑न॒ क्षुधं॑ पुरुहूत॒ विश्वा॑म् ।व॒यं राज॑भिः प्रथ॒मा धना॑न्य॒स्माके॑न वृ॒जने॑ना जयेम

हे बहुपुकारे गए इन्द्र, गौओं से हम दुर्गति में डालने वाली दरिद्रता को पार कर जाएँ और जौ से सारी भूख को। हम राजाओं के साथ मिलकर, अपने ही दल के बल से, सबसे पहले धन जीत लें।

With cattle may we overcome hard-going poverty, and with barley all hunger, much-invoked one. With our kings, may we be first to win riches by our own strength.

बृह॒स्पति॑र्नः॒ परि॑ पातु प॒श्चादु॒तोत्त॑रस्मा॒दध॑रादघा॒योः ।इन्द्रः॑ पु॒रस्ता॑दु॒त म॑ध्य॒तो नः॒ सखा॒ सखि॑भ्यो॒ वरि॑वः कृणोतु

बृहस्पति पीछे से, ऊपर से और नीचे से पापी के विरुद्ध हमारी रक्षा करें। इन्द्र सामने से और बीच से हमारी रक्षा करें; सखा होकर वह अपने सखाओं के लिए खुली जगह (छुटकारा) बनाए।

May Bṛhaspati protect us from behind, from above and from below, against the one who means harm. May Indra protect us from in front and in the middle; as a friend to his friends, may he make wide space for us.
