इन्द्रः

तम॑स्य॒ द्यावा॑पृथि॒वी सचे॑तसा॒ विश्वे॑भिर्दे॒वैरनु॒ शुष्म॑मावताम् ।यदैत्कृ॑ण्वा॒नो म॑हि॒मान॑मिन्द्रि॒यं पी॒त्वी सोम॑स्य॒ क्रतु॑माँ अवर्धत

द्यावा और पृथिवी ने एकमत होकर, सब देवों के साथ मिलकर, इन्द्र के उस बल का समर्थन किया — जब वह अपनी इन्द्र-महिमा प्रकट करता हुआ निकला और सोम पीकर क्रतु से भरा हुआ बढ़ता गया।

Heaven and Earth, of one mind, together with all the gods, helped his surging strength when he went out to show his greatness and his Indra-power. He drank the soma, and with his purpose set he grew strong.

तम॑स्य॒ विष्णु॑र्महि॒मान॒मोज॑सां॒शुं द॑ध॒न्वान्मधु॑नो॒ वि र॑प्शते ।दे॒वेभि॒रिन्द्रो॑ म॒घवा॑ स॒याव॑भिर्वृ॒त्रं ज॑घ॒न्वाँ अ॑भव॒द्वरे॑ण्यः

विष्णु ने अपने ओज से मधु (सोम) के अंशु को बहा दिया और इन्द्र की इसी महिमा से भरपूर हो उठा। साथ चलने वाले देवों के साथ मिलकर मघवान् इन्द्र वृत्र को मारकर वरणीय हो गया।

Vishnu, making the stalk of honey flow with his might, proclaims this greatness of his. With the gods as his companions, Indra the bounteous killed Vritra and became the one everyone chooses.

वृ॒त्रेण॒ यदहि॑ना॒ बिभ्र॒दायु॑धा स॒मस्थि॑था यु॒धये॒ शंस॑मा॒विदे॑ ।विश्वे॑ ते॒ अत्र॑ म॒रुतः॑ स॒ह त्मनाव॑र्धन्नुग्र महि॒मान॑मिन्द्रि॒यम्

हे उग्र इन्द्र, जब तू आयुध लिए हुए अहि वृत्र के साथ युद्ध करने और कीर्ति पाने के लिए भिड़ गया, तब सब मरुतों ने स्वयं तेरे साथ रहकर तेरी इन्द्र-महिमा को बढ़ाया।

When you stood up against Vritra the serpent to fight, carrying your weapons, so as to win praise, all the Maruts there, fierce one, joined you of their own accord and strengthened your greatness and your Indra-power.

ज॒ज्ञा॒न ए॒व व्य॑बाधत॒ स्पृधः॒ प्राप॑श्यद्वी॒रो अ॒भि पौंस्यं॒ रण॑म् ।अवृ॑श्च॒दद्रि॒मव॑ स॒स्यदः॑ सृज॒दस्त॑भ्ना॒न्नाकं॑ स्वप॒स्यया॑ पृ॒थुम्

जन्म लेते ही उसने विरोधियों को परे हटा दिया; उस वीर ने अपने पौरुष और युद्ध को सामने देखा। उसने पर्वत को चीरा, बहती जलधाराओं को नीचे छोड़ दिया, और अपने सुन्दर कौशल से विस्तृत आकाश को थाम दिया।

As soon as he was born he drove his rivals apart, and the hero looked ahead to manly deeds and battle. He split the rock and let loose the flowing streams. With skilful work he propped up the wide vault of the sky.

आदिन्द्रः॑ स॒त्रा तवि॑षीरपत्यत॒ वरी॑यो॒ द्यावा॑पृथि॒वी अ॑बाधत ।अवा॑भरद्धृषि॒तो वज्र॑माय॒सं शेवं॑ मि॒त्राय॒ वरु॑णाय दा॒शुषे॑

तब इन्द्र ने अपनी सारी शक्तियों पर पूरा अधिकार पा लिया और द्यावा-पृथिवी को और अधिक दूर-दूर कर दिया। उमंग में भरकर उसने लोहे का वज्र नीचे चलाया, जो मित्र, वरुण और हवि देने वाले के लिए सुखकर है।

Then Indra took full control of every power and pushed Heaven and Earth further apart. Emboldened, he brought down the iron vajra, a blessing for Mitra and Varuna and for the worshipper.

इन्द्र॒स्यात्र॒ तवि॑षीभ्यो विर॒प्शिन॑ ऋघाय॒तो अ॑रंहयन्त म॒न्यवे॑ ।वृ॒त्रं यदु॒ग्रो व्यवृ॑श्च॒दोज॑सा॒पो बिभ्र॑तं॒ तम॑सा॒ परी॑वृतम्

उस समय वे (मरुत्) अत्यन्त महान्, गरजते हुए इन्द्र की शक्तियों और उसके क्रोध के लिए तेज़ी से दौड़ पड़े, जब उस उग्र ने अपने ओज से वृत्र को चीर डाला — उस वृत्र को, जो जलों को रोके हुए था और अन्धकार से घिरा था।

At this, they rushed out before the powers of Indra, who exults, and before the fury of the raging one, when the fierce one split apart with his might Vritra, who held the waters shut in by darkness.

या वी॒र्या॑णि प्रथ॒मानि॒ कर्त्वा॑ महि॒त्वेभि॒र्यत॑मानौ समी॒यतुः॑ ।ध्वा॒न्तं तमोऽव॑ दध्वसे ह॒त इन्द्रो॑ म॒ह्ना पू॒र्वहू॑तावपत्यत

जो वीर कर्म सबसे पहले किए जाने थे, उनके लिए वे दोनों अपनी-अपनी महिमा से होड़ करते हुए आपस में भिड़े। वृत्र के मारे जाने पर गहरा अन्धकार छितर गया, और पहले ही आह्वान पर इन्द्र ने अपनी महिमा से प्रभुत्व पा लिया।

The two opponents, competing in their greatness, met over the heroic deeds that had to be done first. When Vritra was struck down, the thick darkness was cast away, and Indra by his greatness became master at the first invocation.

विश्वे॑ दे॒वासो॒ अध॒ वृष्ण्या॑नि॒ तेऽव॑र्धय॒न्सोम॑वत्या वच॒स्यया॑ ।र॒द्धं वृ॒त्रमहि॒मिन्द्र॑स्य॒ हन्म॑ना॒ग्निर्न जम्भै॑स्तृ॒ष्वन्न॑मावयत्

फिर सब देवों ने सोम से युक्त स्तुति-वाणी से तेरे पौरुष-बलों को बढ़ाया। इन्द्र के प्रहार से अहि वृत्र वश में आ गया, और इन्द्र उसे ऐसे निगल गया जैसे अग्नि अपने दाँतों से सूखी सामग्री चबा जाती है।

Then all the gods strengthened your bull-like powers with speech joined to soma. Vritra the serpent was brought down by Indra's blow, and like Agni with his jaws, he greedily devoured him as food.

भूरि॒ दक्षे॑भिर्वच॒नेभि॒रृक्व॑भिः स॒ख्येभिः॑ स॒ख्यानि॒ प्र वो॑चत ।इन्द्रो॒ धुनिं॑ च॒ चुमु॑रिं च द॒म्भय॑ञ्छ्रद्धामन॒स्या शृ॑णुते द॒भीत॑ये

कुशल, ऋचाओं से युक्त वचनों के द्वारा, सखाओं के साथ मिलकर, उसकी बहुत-सी मित्रताओं का बखान करो। इन्द्र धुनि और चुमुरि को दबाकर, श्रद्धालु मन वाले दभीति की पुकार सुनता है।

With many skilful words and chants, speak out as friends about his deeds of friendship. Crushing Dhuni and Cumuri, Indra listens with a trusting mind to Dabhiti.

त्वं पु॒रूण्या भ॑रा॒ स्वश्व्या॒ येभि॒र्मंसै॑ नि॒वच॑नानि॒ शंस॑न् ।सु॒गेभि॒र्विश्वा॑ दुरि॒ता त॑रेम वि॒दो षु ण॑ उर्वि॒या गा॒धम॒द्य

तू हमारे लिए अच्छे घोड़ों वाले बहुत-से धन ले आ, जिनसे स्तुति-वचन कहता हुआ मैं आदर पाऊँ। हम सुगम मार्गों से सब विपत्तियों को पार कर जाएँ; आज तू हमारे लिए विस्तृत जल में थाह खोज दे।

Bring us many things, with fine horses among them, so that I may keep them in mind as I recite my words of praise. By easy paths may we cross over every trouble. Find us today a wide ford.
