Like a newborn child he has cried out down into the wood, when the ruddy prize-winning steed seeks to win the sun. He joins with the seed of heaven that swells the milk; with good thought we ask him for wide-reaching shelter.

He who is the pillar of heaven, the well-spread support, the full stalk, goes around in every direction. He will offer worship to these two great world-halves in due order. The poet has held the two together as they join, and has held refreshments together too.

Great is the well-made feast of soma, the honey. Wide is Aditi's pasture for the one who travels the path of truth. He is the ruddy bull who rules the rain from here, the leader of the waters, who brings help from here and deserves verses of praise.

The cloud that has breath is milked of ghee and milk; the navel of truth, the immortal drink, is born. Bountiful men, acting together, satisfy him; the swelling ones rain down the one who has been set in motion.

The stalk has roared, joined with the wave; for man it swells the skin that delights the gods. It places an embryo in the lap of Aditi, through which we may gain children and descendants.

Let those never-failing streams flow down into the thousand-streamed filter, and let them be rich in offspring in the third realm. Four springs, set down below from heaven and dripping with ghee, carry the oblation, the immortal drink.

He takes on a white form when he sets out to win: Soma, the generous lord, knows abundance. With insight and ritual labour he joins them; he will burst open the water-filled cask of heaven, sending it down along the slope toward us.
