भाववृत्तम्

यो य॒ज्ञो वि॒श्वत॒स्तन्तु॑भिस्त॒त एक॑शतं देवक॒र्मेभि॒राय॑तः ।इ॒मे व॑यन्ति पि॒तरो॒ य आ॑य॒युः प्र व॒याप॑ व॒येत्या॑सते त॒ते

जो यज्ञ चारों ओर तन्तुओं से ताने हुए कपड़े की तरह फैला है, और एक सौ एक देवकर्मों से आगे बढ़ाया गया है — जो पितर पहले आ चुके हैं वे ही उसे बुनते हैं; वे इस ताने हुए पट के पास बैठकर कहते हैं, 'आगे बुनो, पीछे बुनो।'

The sacrifice that is stretched out on every side with threads, drawn out with a hundred and one works of the gods, is woven by these fathers who have come here. They sit beside the stretched warp and say, "Weave forward, weave back."

पुमाँ॑ एनं तनुत॒ उत्कृ॑णत्ति॒ पुमा॒न्वि त॑त्ने॒ अधि॒ नाके॑ अ॒स्मिन् ।इ॒मे म॒यूखा॒ उप॑ सेदुरू॒ सदः॒ सामा॑नि चक्रु॒स्तस॑रा॒ण्योत॑वे

पुरुष इस (यज्ञरूपी पट) को तानता है और ऊपर की ओर खींचकर बुनता है; पुरुष ने ही इसे इस द्युलोक पर फैलाया है। ये खूँटे (मयूख) आसन पर आ बैठे हैं, और बुनने के लिए सामों को ही ढरकी बना लिया गया है।

A man stretches it out and draws it off; a man has spread it out upon this vault of heaven. These pegs have settled at the seat; they made the sāmans into shuttles for weaving.

कासी॑त्प्र॒मा प्र॑ति॒मा किं नि॒दान॒माज्यं॒ किमा॑सीत्परि॒धिः क आ॑सीत् ।छन्दः॒ किमा॑सी॒त्प्र‍उ॑गं॒ किमु॒क्थं यद्दे॒वा दे॒वमय॑जन्त॒ विश्वे॑

(उस आदियज्ञ का) प्रमाण क्या था, प्रतिमान क्या, उसका आधार क्या था? आज्य क्या था, परिधि क्या थी? छन्द कौन-सा था, प्रउग क्या था, उक्थ क्या था — जब सब देवों ने देव का यजन किया?

What was the model, what the copy, what the underlying link? What was the ghee, and what the enclosing sticks? What was the meter, what the opening chant (praüga), what the recitation (uktha), when all the gods sacrificed to the god?

अ॒ग्नेर्गा॑य॒त्र्य॑भवत्स॒युग्वो॒ष्णिह॑या सवि॒ता सं ब॑भूव ।अ॒नु॒ष्टुभा॒ सोम॑ उ॒क्थैर्मह॑स्वा॒न्बृह॒स्पते॑र्बृह॒ती वाच॑मावत्

गायत्री अग्नि के साथ जुड़ी, सविता उष्णिह् के साथ मिले; उक्थों से महिमावान सोम अनुष्टुप् के साथ रहा, और बृहती ने बृहस्पति की वाणी को सँभाला।

The gāyatrī became Agni's yoke-mate; Savitar joined with the uṣṇih. Soma, made great by recitations, joined with the anuṣṭubh; the bṛhatī helped Bṛhaspati's speech.

वि॒राण्मि॒त्रावरु॑णयोरभि॒श्रीरिन्द्र॑स्य त्रि॒ष्टुबि॒ह भा॒गो अह्नः॑ ।विश्वा॑न्दे॒वाञ्जग॒त्या वि॑वेश॒ तेन॑ चाकॢप्र॒ ऋष॑यो मनु॒ष्याः॑

विराट् मित्र और वरुण की शोभा बनी, त्रिष्टुप् यहाँ दिन में इन्द्र का भाग है; जगती सब देवों में प्रविष्ट हुई — इसी के द्वारा मनुष्य ऋषि यज्ञ के लिए तैयार हुए।

The virāj was the glory of Mitra and Varuna; the triṣṭubh here was Indra's share of the day. The jagatī entered all the gods. By this pattern the human seers set themselves in order.

चा॒कॢ॒प्रे तेन॒ ऋष॑यो मनु॒ष्या॑ य॒ज्ञे जा॒ते पि॒तरो॑ नः पुरा॒णे ।पश्य॑न्मन्ये॒ मन॑सा॒ चक्ष॑सा॒ तान्य इ॒मं य॒ज्ञमय॑जन्त॒ पूर्वे॑

उसी के द्वारा मनुष्य ऋषि, हमारे पितर, तैयार हुए, जब वह पुराना यज्ञ उत्पन्न हुआ। मन से और आँख से मैं उन्हें देखता-सा अनुभव करता हूँ, जिन पूर्वजों ने पहले इस यज्ञ का यजन किया था।

By this the human seers, our fathers, set themselves in order when the sacrifice was born long ago. With my mind as my eye, I think I see those who first performed this sacrifice.

स॒हस्तो॑माः स॒हछ॑न्दस आ॒वृतः॑ स॒हप्र॑मा॒ ऋष॑यः स॒प्त दैव्याः॑ ।पूर्वे॑षां॒ पन्था॑मनु॒दृश्य॒ धीरा॑ अ॒न्वाले॑भिरे र॒थ्यो॒३॒॑ न र॒श्मीन्

स्तोमों के साथ, छन्दों के साथ, यज्ञ की आवृत्तियों और मापों के साथ — सात दैवी ऋषि (रहे)। पूर्वजों के मार्ग को देखकर उन धीर पुरुषों ने उसे वैसे ही थाम लिया जैसे रथी लगाम थामते हैं।

Sharing the praise songs, the meters, the ritual rounds and the model, the seven divine seers, the wise ones, looked along the path of the ancients and took hold after them, like charioteers taking the reins.
