अग्निः

आग्निं न स्ववृ॑क्तिभि॒र्होता॑रं त्वा वृणीमहे ।य॒ज्ञाय॑ स्ती॒र्णब॑र्हिषे॒ वि वो॒ मदे॑ शी॒रं पा॑व॒कशो॑चिषं॒ विव॑क्षसे

हे अग्नि, बिछे हुए बर्हिस् वाले इस यज्ञ के लिए हम अपनी सुगठित स्तुतियों से तुझे—तीव्र और पावक ज्वाला वाले को—होता के रूप में चुनते हैं। (वि वो मदे = तुम्हारे हर्ष में; विवक्षसे = तू बढ़ता है।)

With our own well-crafted hymns we choose you, Agni, as hotar for the sacrifice where the ritual grass is spread — you, the [śīra], whose flame makes things clean. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

त्वामु॒ ते स्वा॒भुवः॑ शु॒म्भन्त्यश्व॑राधसः ।वेति॒ त्वामु॑प॒सेच॑नी॒ वि वो॒ मद॒ ऋजी॑तिरग्न॒ आहु॑ति॒र्विव॑क्षसे

हे अग्नि, अपने ही बल वाले और घोड़ों की सम्पदा वाले ये तेरे (सेवक) तुझे सजाते हैं; घृत उड़ेलने वाली चम्मच तेरी ओर जाती है और सीधी गिरती हुई आहुति तुझ तक पहुँचती है। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

These people, strong in themselves and rich in horses, adorn you. The pouring ladle seeks you, Agni, and so does the oblation that goes straight to you. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

त्वे ध॒र्माण॑ आसते जु॒हूभिः॑ सिञ्च॒तीरि॑व ।कृ॒ष्णा रू॒पाण्यर्जु॑ना॒ वि वो॒ मदे॒ विश्वा॒ अधि॒ श्रियो॑ धिषे॒ विव॑क्षसे

तुझमें यज्ञ के धर्म (नियम) टिके हैं, जैसे जुहू चम्मचों से घृत सींचती हुई धाराएँ; काले और उज्ज्वल रूप धारण करते हुए तू सारी शोभा अपने ऊपर ले लेता है। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

The upholders [of the rite] sit around you, like women pouring with ladles. Black forms and bright ones, all splendours, you take on. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

यम॑ग्ने॒ मन्य॑से र॒यिं सह॑सावन्नमर्त्य ।तमा नो॒ वाज॑सातये॒ वि वो॒ मदे॑ य॒ज्ञेषु॑ चि॒त्रमा भ॑रा॒ विव॑क्षसे

हे बलशाली अमर अग्नि, जिस धन को तू (हमारे योग्य) समझता है, उसे बल पाने के लिए हमें ला; यज्ञों में वह अद्भुत धन हमें दे। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

Whatever wealth you have in mind, Agni, mighty and immortal, bring that bright wealth to us at the sacrifices, so that we win the prize. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

अ॒ग्निर्जा॒तो अथ॑र्वणा वि॒दद्विश्वा॑नि॒ काव्या॑ ।भुव॑द्दू॒तो वि॒वस्व॑तो॒ वि वो॒ मदे॑ प्रि॒यो य॒मस्य॒ काम्यो॒ विव॑क्षसे

अथर्वन् द्वारा उत्पन्न किया गया अग्नि सब काव्यों (कवि-कर्मों) को जान गया; वह विवस्वत् का दूत और यम का प्रिय तथा प्यारा बना। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

Agni, born through Atharvan, came to know all the poets' arts. He became Vivasvant's messenger, dear and desired by Yama. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

त्वां य॒ज्ञेष्वी॑ळ॒तेऽग्ने॑ प्रय॒त्य॑ध्व॒रे ।त्वं वसू॑नि॒ काम्या॒ वि वो॒ मदे॒ विश्वा॑ दधासि दा॒शुषे॒ विव॑क्षसे

हे अग्नि, यज्ञों में, अध्वर आगे बढ़ते समय, लोग तेरी स्तुति करते हैं; तू हवि देने वाले को सब मनचाही सम्पदाएँ देता है। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

At the sacrifices, when the ritual moves forward, they call on you, Agni. You give all desirable goods to the worshipper. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

हे अग्नि, मनुष्यों ने तुझे यज्ञों में सुन्दर ऋत्विज के रूप में बैठाया है—घृत-मुख वाले, उज्ज्वल और आँखों से सबसे अधिक दिखाई देने वाले। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

At the sacrifices people have set you down, Agni, as the lovely officiating priest: ghee-faced, bright, the most conspicuous to the eyes. In your exhilaration you grow strong.

अग्ने॑ शु॒क्रेण॑ शो॒चिषो॒रु प्र॑थयसे बृ॒हत् ।अ॒भि॒क्रन्द॑न्वृषायसे॒ वि वो॒ मदे॒ गर्भं॑ दधासि जा॒मिषु॒ विव॑क्षसे

हे अग्नि, अपनी उज्ज्वल ज्वाला से तू दूर-दूर और ऊँचे फैलता है; गरजता हुआ तू वृषभ-सा प्रचण्ड होता है और सजातीय (स्त्रियों) में गर्भ स्थापित करता है। (तुम्हारे हर्ष में; तू बढ़ता है।)

Agni, with your bright flame you spread out wide and lofty. Roaring, you act like a bull and plant the embryo in the sisters. In your exhilaration you grow strong.
