व्रात्य का दिशाओं में गमन और अन्न-भक्षकThe Vratya's movement through the quarters

स यत् प्राचीं दिशम् अनु व्यचलन् मारुतं शर्धो भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलन् मनो ऽन्नादं कृत्वा ।[१] मनसान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥१॥ [२]

जब वह (व्रात्य) पूर्व दिशा की ओर चला, तो वह मरुतों का दल बनकर चला और मन को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले मन से अन्न खाता है।

When he (the Vratya) moved out toward the eastern quarter, he moved out as the troop of the Maruts, making mind the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with mind as the food-eater.

स यद् दक्षिणां दिशम् अनु व्यचलद् इन्द्रो भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलद् बलम् अन्नादं कृत्वा ।[३] बलेनान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥२॥ [४]

जब वह दक्षिण दिशा की ओर चला, तो इन्द्र बनकर चला और बल को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले बल से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the southern quarter, he moved out as Indra, making strength the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with strength as the food-eater.

स यत् प्रतीचीं दिशम् अनु व्यचलद् वरुणो राजा भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलद् अपो᳙ ऽन्नादीः कृत्वा ।[५] अद्भिर् अन्नादीभिर् अन्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥३॥ [६]

जब वह पश्चिम दिशा की ओर चला, तो राजा वरुण बनकर चला और जल को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले जल से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the western quarter, he moved out as King Varuna, making the waters the eaters of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the waters as food-eaters.

स यद् उदीचीं दिशम् अनु व्यचलत् सोमो राजा भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलत् सप्तर्षिभिर् हुत आहुतिम् अन्नादीं कृत्वा ।[७] आहुत्यान्नाद्यान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥४॥ [८]

जब वह उत्तर दिशा की ओर चला, तो सप्तर्षियों द्वारा आहुति दिया गया राजा सोम बनकर चला और आहुति को अन्न खाने वाली बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाली आहुति से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the northern quarter, he moved out as King Soma, offered by the seven seers, making the oblation the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the oblation as the food-eater.

स यद् ध्रुवां दिशम् अनु व्यचलद् विष्णुर् भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलद् विराजम् अन्नादीं कृत्वा ।[९] विराजान्नाद्यान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥५॥ [१०]

जब वह ध्रुव (स्थिर) दिशा की ओर चला, तो विष्णु बनकर चला और विराज् को अन्न खाने वाली बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाली विराज् से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the fixed quarter, he moved out as Vishnu, making Viraj the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with Viraj as the food-eater.

स यत् पशून् अनु व्यचलद् रुद्रो भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलद् ओषधीर् अन्नादीः कृत्वा ।[११] ओषधीभिर् अन्नादीभिर् अन्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥६॥ [१२]

जब वह पशुओं की ओर चला, तो रुद्र बनकर चला और ओषधियों को अन्न खाने वाली बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाली ओषधियों से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the animals, he moved out as Rudra, making the plants the eaters of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the plants as food-eaters.

स यत् पितॄ᳓न् अनु व्यचलद् यमो राजा भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलत् स्वधाकारम् अन्नादं कृत्वा ।[१३] स्वधाकारेणान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥७॥ [१४]

जब वह पितरों की ओर चला, तो राजा यम बनकर चला और 'स्वधा' के उच्चारण को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले स्वधाकार से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the Fathers, he moved out as King Yama, making the call 'svadha' the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the svadha-call as the food-eater.

स यन् मनुष्या᳙न् अनु व्यचलद् अग्निर् भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलत् स्वाहाकारम् अन्नादं कृत्वा ।[१५] स्वाहाकारेणान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥८॥ [१६]

जब वह मनुष्यों की ओर चला, तो अग्नि बनकर चला और 'स्वाहा' के उच्चारण को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले स्वाहाकार से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward human beings, he moved out as Agni, making the call 'svaha' the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the svaha-call as the food-eater.

स यद् ऊर्ध्वां दिशम् अनु व्यचलद् ब्ŕ̥हस्पतिर् भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलद् वषट्कारम् अन्नादं कृत्वा ।[१७] वषट्कारेणान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥९॥ [१८]

जब वह ऊर्ध्व दिशा की ओर चला, तो बृहस्पति बनकर चला और 'वषट्' के उच्चारण को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले वषट्कार से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the upward quarter, he moved out as Brihaspati, making the call 'vashat' the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the vashat-call as the food-eater.

स यद् देवान् अनु व्यचलद् ईशानो भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलन् मन्युम् अन्नादं कृत्वा ।[१९] मन्युनान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥१०॥ [२०]

जब वह देवताओं की ओर चला, तो ईशान बनकर चला और मन्यु को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले मन्यु से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward the gods, he moved out as Ishana, making fury the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with fury as the food-eater.

स यत् प्रजा अनु व्यचलत् प्रजापतिर् भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलत् प्राणम् अन्नादं कृत्वा ।[२१] प्राणेनान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥११॥ [२२]

जब वह प्रजाओं की ओर चला, तो प्रजापति बनकर चला और प्राण को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले प्राण से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward living creatures, he moved out as Prajapati, making breath the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with breath as the food-eater.

स यत् सर्वान् अन्तर्देशान् अनु व्यचलत् परमेष्ठी भूत्वानुव्य᳙चलद् ब्रह्मान्नादं कृत्वा ।[२३] ब्रह्मणान्नादेनान्नम् अत्ति य एवं वेद ॥१२॥ [२४]

जब वह सब मध्यवर्ती दिशाओं की ओर चला, तो परमेष्ठी बनकर चला और ब्रह्म को अन्न खाने वाला बनाया। जो ऐसा जानता है, वह अन्न खाने वाले ब्रह्म से अन्न खाता है।

When he moved out toward all the intermediate quarters, he moved out as Parameshthin, making the brahman the eater of food. Whoever knows this eats food with the brahman as the food-eater.
