The theologians ask: should the soma be picked over or not? Soma is king of plants; whatever has fallen into it is as if it had swallowed it, so picking it over is like making it spit out what it swallowed, and not picking it over is like something that has fallen into the eye and keeps moving about. Either way, the adhvaryu and the sacrificer would go hungry. So he should simply say, 'Soma-seller, clean the soma.' Whichever course is taken, he puts the fault on the soma-seller, and that is why the soma-seller goes hungry. Aruna Aupaveshi used to say: 'By buying the soma I already secure the third pressing.' He measures the soma on an animal's hide and so secures cattle, because the third pressing is cattle. If he wants someone to be without cattle, he should measure for him on the hairless side, because that side is not good for cattle. If he wants someone to be rich in cattle, he should measure on the hairy side, because that is the form of cattle, and by that form he secures cattle for him. He buys it at the edge of the water, so that it is bought with its sap. He says, 'You are of our household,' and so makes it his own. He says, 'Bright is your cup,' since the bright (shukra) cup is its cup. He goes toward it with a cart, so he goes toward its greatness. That is why on level ground people live by carting goods; where it is carried on the head, in the hills, people live by carrying goods on their heads. He measures with the aticchandas verse 'abhi tyam devam savitaram.' The aticchandas contains all the meters and is their summit, so he makes the sacrificer the summit among his equals. He measures letting go one finger at a time, so that each measure uses an unused finger; that is why the fingers differ in strength. He brings the thumb under each of them, so the thumb is as strong as the other fingers and moves with all of them. If he measured with all the fingers together, fingers would be born joined; because he measures with one at a time, they are born separate. He measures five times with a yajus: the pankti meter has five syllables, and the sacrifice is fivefold. Then he measures five times in silence. Together these make ten; the viraj meter has ten syllables, and viraj is food, so he secures food. Measuring with the yajus secures the past, and measuring in silence secures the future. If the soma were only as much as he measured, it would belong to the sacrificer alone and not to the sadasyas. So, saying 'For the offspring, you,' he sweeps together (the rest of the soma) and gives the sadasyas their share. He ties it in a cloth; cloth belongs to all the gods, so he gives it the strength of all the deities. Soma is cattle: saying 'For in-breath, you,' he ties it and puts in-breath into cattle; saying 'For through-breath (vyana), you,' he loosens it and puts through-breath into cattle. That is why the breaths do not leave a sleeping man.
