This fire-altar is piled for the heavenly world. If he did not climb up after it, the sacrificer would lose the heavenly world, so he says: “I have stepped onto the earth; let breath not leave me. I have stepped onto the midspace; let offspring not leave me. I have stepped onto the sky; I have reached the light.” This is the climbing after Agni, and by it he climbs after him to reach the heavenly world. If he measured it to the size of the wings, he would attain a lesser sacrifice and his offspring would be worse than himself; he measures it to the size of the vedi, so he attains a greater sacrifice and his offspring are not worse than himself. Piling for the first time he should pile a thousand (bricks), for this world measures a thousand, and so he wins this world; for the second time two thousand, for the midspace is two thousand; for the third time three thousand, for yonder world is three thousand. The first time he should pile it knee-high, and so climbs to this world by the gāyatrī; the second time navel-high, climbing to the midspace by the triṣṭubh; the third time neck-high, climbing to yonder world by the jagatī. Having piled the fire the first time he should not go to a rāmā, thinking “I would place seed in what is no womb”; having piled it the second time, not to another man's wife; the third time, not to any woman. For in piling the fire he deposits seed, and if he went to a woman he would be deprived of seed. But they also say that not to go to her harms his offspring. Since he sets down the retaḥsic (seed-pouring) bricks, they bear the sacrificer's seed, so he may go to her, so that the seed is not spilled. There are three seeds: father, son, and grandson. If he set down two retaḥsic bricks he would cut his seed off; he sets down three for the seed's continuity. The first retaḥsic is this earth, and earth is speech; so people see it, and they see speech when it speaks. The second is the midspace, and the midspace is breath; so they see neither the midspace nor breath. The third is yonder world, and that is the eye; so they see it, and they see the eye. He sets down this one and that one with a yajus, the middle one mentally, to put these worlds and the breaths in order. He says, “The sacrifice was offered by the Bhṛgus, its blessings granted by the Vasus; of that sacrifice of yours, offered and enjoyed, may I share the wealth here.” By this he milks the stotra and the śastra. He says, “Father Mātariśvan has placed steps without a gap; the Uśijs have shaped steps without a gap; Soma, the all-knowing leader, shall lead; Bṛhaspati shall recite the joys of the uktha.” This is Agni's uktha, and by it he praises him in turn.

This is the anuvāka's index line, not part of the rite. It lists the closing words of the earlier sections (minuyāt, tṛtīyaṃ cinvānaḥ, striyam, pautraḥ, ca) and adds the closing count, 'vai sapta ca' ('and seven').
