There are three pressings, yet people cut off the third pressing, leaving it without a stalk (amshu). So, after offering the upamshu cup, he should put a stalk into the upamshu vessel, mix it in at the third pressing, and press it. Because he makes it swell, the pressing has a stalk; because he presses it, it has pressed residue (rjisha). In this way he makes all the pressings possessed of stalks, possessed of the bright (shukra) drink, and equal in strength. (Riddle verses:) Two oceans, spread out and unaging, turn round like feet in a belly; one of them people cross seeing it, the other they cross by a bridge, not seeing it. One long-haired being, who knows all the worlds, wears two firm, continuous coverings; he goes hidden, clothed in black, and takes up the bright one, leaving it behind for the old woman. Whatever the gods did in the sacrifice, the asuras did too. Then the gods saw this great sacrifice and spread it out: they made the agnihotra their observance — so one should keep a twofold observance (eating twice a day), since the agnihotra is offered twice; they made the full-moon sacrifice the animal for Agni and Soma, and the new-moon sacrifice the animal for Agni; they made the Vaishvadeva the morning pressing, the Varunapraghasas the midday pressing, and the Sakamedhas, the offering to the ancestors and the Tryambaka offerings the third pressing. The asuras tried to follow this sacrifice of theirs but could not reach it. They said, 'These gods have become impossible to harm (adhvartavya)' — that is why the adhvara is called adhvara. Then the gods prospered and the asuras were defeated. Whoever knows this and sacrifices with soma prospers himself, and his rival is defeated.
