Prajapati shared out food among the gods and said, 'Whatever is left over beyond these worlds shall be mine.' What was left over was Indra the king, Indra the overlord and Indra the self-ruler. He then milked these worlds in three ways, and that is why the tridhatu (the 'threefold') has its name. If a man wants to become an eater of food, he should offer this tridhatu: a cake on eleven potsherds each to Indra the king, Indra the overlord and Indra the self-ruler. This earth is Indra the king, the atmosphere is Indra the overlord, and the sky up there is Indra the self-ruler. He goes to these worlds with their own share, and they give him food, so he becomes an eater of food. A cow is milked once her calf has made her let down her milk. In the same way he milks these worlds, now ready to give, for as much food as he wants. He bakes the cakes on potsherds set face up, so that their strength does not go stale. There are three cakes because there are three worlds, and this is how he wins the worlds. Each cake is larger than the one before, because the worlds are like that too, and this brings prosperity. He cuts the portions from all of them together. He recites the verses in reverse order and without a slip, so that the rite does not burn him up.
